Exploring San Tan Mountain Regional Park

One popular spot for exploring the Sonoran Desert landscape, without traveling too far outside the city, is San Tan Mountain Regional Park. Encompassing eight miles of trails, including those accessible on horseback and by mountain bike, the 10,000 acre park has Goldmine Mountain at its apex. A majority of the trails have been repurposed from old mining roads, a legacy of the area’s mining past. There is also a petroglyph on site dating back to the era when Hohokam tribes inhabited the region.

The natural habitat around San Tan Mountain is as varied as the terrain, with a highlight being some of the few crested saguaros found in the Sonoran Desert. These unique tree-like cacti can grow taller than 20 feet, and the blossom is Arizona’s state wildflower. In addition, there are numerous coyotes, javelinas, and Gila monsters that call the area home.
